About Us

The Society has over 200 members and is constituted to educate the public about, and to promote, the arts. The Society is managed by an elected Commitee of volunteers, and our principal activities include

– Lectures on a wide range of arts-related subjects

– Visits which are made to galleries, historic houses, museums and other places of interest

– Mornings of Special Interest to study a specific topic in depth.

Members are also welcome to join in Arts Outreach activities. If you enjoy getting involved and meeting new people, there are ample opportunities to volunteer in a number of ways that would make a useful contribution to the running of the Society.

Our Society in Saffron Walden is an affiliated member of The Arts Society, headquartered in London, which has over 300 societies in the UK, Europe, Australia and New Zealand with over 90,000 individual members.

Lectures and Days of Special Interest are usually given by professional lecturers accredited by The Arts Society, and who are specialists in their fields.

Our members are automatically registered with The Arts Society and will receive the The Arts Society Review, a quarterly full-colour magazine. This is also available as an e-zine, available online at the The Arts
Society website. Click Magazine to see the latest edition. An archive of previous issues is also available.

Additionally an Arts Society membership card is available which can often be used to obtain discounted entry charges at numerous arts events and historic sites. Cards can be obtained by applying to your Membership Secretary.

We understand that it can be a bit confusing at first glance! We are a local group, The Arts Society Saffron Walden. We function pretty autonomously day-to-day but we have the benefit of the national organisation from whom we get lots of support and who, very importantly, over-see the pool of lecturers from whom we draw our speakers. As a member, you
can just come to local lectures, dip into the visits and study days or volunteering projects which you choose; but you may choose to spread your wings and go to the wealth of lectures by other societies, county societies or events held at our national headquarters in London. It is up to you to decide what interests you!
